The Ember Mug is one of the most innovative drinkware products to hit the market in recent years. This smart mug allows you to set your desired drinking temperature through a smartphone app, and the mug will actually keep your drink at that exact temp for up to 1.5 hours on battery or indefinitely when placed on the charging coaster. I recently picked up the 10 oz bundle from my local Costco warehouse impressed by its functionality.
Out of the Box
Upon opening the Costco bundle, you receive the 10 oz Ember Mug, a charging coaster, a protective sleeve for the mug, and a 6-foot micro USB charging cable. The mug itself has a very sleek and modern aesthetic. It is made from stainless steel and has a weighted base that not only keeps it from tipping over easily but also allows for rapid heating and more efficient temperature regulation. The micro USB charging port is discreetly hidden inside the bottom of the mug’s base.
While Ember Mug offers its products in a few different color options, the Costco bundle only includes the stainless steel and white colorway. This neutral tone will likely appeal to a larger audience. The LED light band that wraps around the center of the mug displays different colors based on temperature mode: yellow for heating up, green for temperature maintained, blue for cooling down. It’s subtle but adds to the mug’s overall minimal yet technological appearance.
Ease of Use
What sets the Ember Mug apart from other smart mugs is how incredibly easy and intuitive it is to operate. Simply download the Ember app (available for both iOS and Android), connect to your mug via Bluetooth, and start customizing your preferences. The app allows you to dial in to a specific drinking temperature between 120-145°F. You can also create customizable presets for different beverages like coffee, tea, hot chocolate, etc.
The mug itself only has one button located on its base to toggle between presets if you don't have your phone on hand. The Ember app also includes a customizable auto sleep timer that will automatically drop the mug’s temperature after a set amount of inactive time. This helps conserve the mug's battery if you walk away and forget to power it off.
